What is a Career?
A career isn’t just “what job you do.” It’s the long-term path of your life - your direction, your legacy, and a huge part of how you'll be judged in this world and the next.
Think of it like this:
You’ll spend 30+ years of your life working 8+ hours a day — that’s a massive chunk of your life. So it can’t just be about making money or pleasing your parents. Your career should:
- Use the skills and gifts Allah gave you.
- Be something that helps others or brings goodness into the world.
- Most importantly, it should be something that pleases Allah and passes His test.
The Big 3 Career Questions
To build a purposeful career, ask yourself:
What are you good at?
- What subjects, skills, or tasks come naturally to you?
- What do others compliment you for?
What do you enjoy doing?
- What kind of work gives you energy instead of draining it?
What is needed in the world?
- What problems need solving? What skills are in demand?
- What can help your community, or the world at large?
Where these three things overlap, you’ll find your true path — especially when you do it for the sake of Allah.
Take some time to reflect and answer each of these questions. Look for patterns or similarities between each of the categories.
Purpose, Worship & Accountability
Reminder: Life is a test
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَٱلْحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفُورُ ˹He is the One˺ Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving. Surah Mulk (67:2)Reciter: Al-Saut Al-Baki Al-Shaykh Muhammad Siddiq Al-Minshawi
On the Day of Judgment, you’ll be asked:
- How did you earn your money?
- How did you spend your time?
A career done with the right intention becomes a form of worship. Even building houses (like a builder) becomes rewardable if:
- The work is halal(aligned with Islamic ethics)
- It serves others (e.g. housing families),
- It’s done with gratitude and ihsaan (excellence).
You don’t have to become an imam or scholar to live purposefully. Just be intentional in your career — and align it with your faith.
Unreasonable Man Thinking: Break the Mould
“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one tries to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” – George Bernard Shaw
Most people follow the system:
- Choose the “safe” job
- Follow the crowd
- Never question why
But if you want to make a difference, you need to be unreasonable in the right way:
- Ask why at every step.
- Don’t accept low expectations.
- Think from first principles (What does Allah want? What is true? What is right?).
- Go against the grain if it means staying true to your values.

How to make Istikharā?
Now that (hopefully) you have an idea of what you want to do, it’s important to ensure seek divine aid in making that decision.
Stage 1: Identifying the decision
Put into words the decision you need to make. For example, “I need to decide whether or not to pursue a career in Software Engineering”
Stage 2: Research and Shura (consultation)
Next, consult other wise and trusted people, for example, people in those fields, family and friends for their advice on the matter and gather all of thepros and cons.
Stage 3: Analyse costs and benefits
List the the pros and cons in writing and weigh them up.
Stage 4: Make a Preliminary Decision
A lot of people forget this, but you should have a preliminary final decision in mind before making Istikharah (e.g. “I think the best decision is going ahead with applying for chemical engineering”).
Make sure to leave emotions aside for making that preliminary final decision.
Stage 5: Istikharah Dua
Istikhara is the process of seeking divine aid in making the right decision. All you need to do is pray two rakaʿāt of voluntary prayer, then read the Du’a for Istikharah below.
Remember to makesure you already have an idea of the correct decision before you do this stage.
If there is no time to pray the 2 rakaʿāt (e.g. an urgent decision needs to be made), you can read the dua without the prayer.
Allāhumma innī astakhīruka bi ʿilmik, wa astaqdiruka bi qudratik, wa as’aluka min faḍlika-l-ʿaẓīm, fa innaka taqdiru wa lā aqdir, wa taʿlamu wa lā aʿlam, wa Anta ʿAllāmu-l-ghuyūb. Allāhumma in kunta taʿlamu an-na hādha-l-amra (mention matter in any language) khayrul-lī fī dīnī wa maʿāshī wa ʿāqibati amrī, faqdurhu lī wa yassirhu lī thumma bārik lī fīhī, wa in kunta taʿlamu anna hādha-l-amra [mention matter in any language]sharrul-lī fī dīnī wa maʿāshī wa ʿāqibati amrī, faṣrifhu ʿannī waṣrifnī ʿanhu waqdur liya-l-khayra ḥaythu kāna thumma arḍinī bih.
Stage 6: Look Out For Signs
The signs below have been listed in order of importance. If a higher sign is seen, then take that one and ignore the rest.
For example, if you’re having good signs in dreams about something, but when you try to do it, it has been made really difficult and impossible to do, then ignore the dream.
The main sign of a positive Istikharah on an issue is that the affair will be made easy for you.
Good Signs - Go ahead with it!
- The affair made easy (main sign)
- Chest being expanded (feeling good)
- Dream - requires and explanation
Bad Signs - DON’T Go ahead with it!
- Task is made impossible to do
- The passion for the decision goes, no inclination towards it anymore
- Something else being made easy for them
Summary
- Answer the 3 questions (What you’re good at, enjoy, and what the world needs).
- Set a vision for where you want to be in 10–20 years.
